When did TFT thin-film liquid crystal display screens become popular?

Leave a message

The popularization period of liquid crystal display screens was in the 1990s.

The popularity of liquid crystal display screens (LCD) is mainly due to the continuous advancement of technology and the growth of market demand. Since the development of dynamic scattering liquid crystal display by RCA in the United States in 1968, LCD technology has gone through several stages of development. In the 1970s, the invention and industrialization of TN (twisted nematic) liquid crystal display screens made LCD technology begin to move towards the practical stage. Subsequently, in the 1980s, the development of STN (super twisted) liquid crystal display screens and the invention of amorphous silicon thin film transistor liquid crystal display technology further promoted the development of LCD technology and entered the stage of large-capacity display.

In the 1990s, with the rapid development of active matrix liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD), LCD technology began to enter the stage of high-definition liquid crystal display. During this period, the performance of TFT-LCD was comparable to that of CRT (cathode ray tube). Since 1996, LCD has been widely used in laptops, and the three major problems that have long plagued liquid crystals, viewing angle, color saturation and brightness, have also been basically solved.

During this period, the advancement of LCD technology not only expanded the application range of displays, making it possible for individuals to use mobile handheld displays, but also launched a fierce market competition with CRTs and eventually became the mainstream of the market. Therefore, it can be said that the 1990s was a key period for the popularization of LCD screens.
